Fresh Start 2013: Spring Cleaning Plan

I’ve spent the past couple days thinking about my cleaning/deluttering/reorganizing plans and I finally felt ready to sit down and write out my plans, room by room.  I am planning on keeping it all together in a little booklet so I can follow the plan when I do my twice a year overhauls.  I like [...]

Fresh Start 2013: Early Spring Cleaning in Phoenix

Okay, so usually the term “spring cleaning” conjures up images of April showers, May flowers, the Easter bunny, etc.  Here in The Valley of the Sun, February brings a mix of cooler weather and what I like to call warmer spring ‘preview’ days.  By April or May, it’s usually too hot to, say, enjoy outdoor [...]

A Year of Less: February Plans and Progress

So with January’s No-Spend turned Low-Spend experiment behind us, I’ve been decompressing a bit so far in February.  I honestly cannot believe we’re practically halfway through this month! I’m still definitely working on our Year of Less.  I am working hard to be mindful about each and every penny I spend.  instead of the old “see it, want [...]

***FREE*** Monthly Bill Payment Record

I created this chart in Microsoft Publisher but for those you don’t have Publisher, I’ve included a PDF copy.  You can simply fill it in by hand monthly, edit it in Publisher or fill in the names of your bills and due dates and then scan or copy it to make additional copies.  :) I keep [...]

Getting things done!

One of my goals for 2013 (resolutions are too easy to break, in my opinion) is to make progress on the house every day.  We moved in August and I’m still not completely unpacked and organized.  The schoolroom and my master bedroom have turned into dumping grounds for all the miscellany I haven’t figured out [...]

Getting Psyched!

blog_flower2

I’ve sort of been cheating, since I’ve started working on my list of projects that I plan to tackle in order to make 2013 “A Year of Less.” I attacked my bathroom counter and drawers.  I tossed all the old or questionable make-up and toiletries including duplicate items or things I just flat out don’t use.  [...]

Change of plans…

The entire family got a stomach virus this past week and I didn’t get ready for our community garage sale.  Bummer! I need a new plan and fast.  We’re overcome with clutter.  The hardest part is sorting everything and deciding what to get rid of. Wish me luck!

Thankfully…

…my neighborhood is hosting a community garage sale on the 17th!  That definitely should help me pare down my “what the heck will I do with it?” pile.  And since this pile is now as tall as my younger daughter (who’s a tall 7yo) I’m happy to finally have a way to unload some of [...]

Pared Down

I’ve been in the process of paring down my wardrobe over the past few weeks.  In theory, I have enough clothes to go about one week without washing.  I should add a disclaimer here…I often get dirty and need to change during the day, so I’m not one of those people who can survive with [...]

Clothing, clothing and more clothing…

When paring down, the easiest place to start always seems to be the clothes.  It’s not difficult for me to toss things that are pilled, stained or no longer fit well. I made the bold decision to toss my “fat” clothes.  I’ve been caught between two sets of clothing for months; one set quite a [...]

Losing touch…

Somehow I’ve found that I’ve lost touch a bit with my desire for simplicity.  We moved in August and I still have two massive piles of *stuff* that needs to be unpacked and put away.  But the house is pretty much full.  Hmmmm.  That can’t be good. It seems as though our closets are bursting [...]

Why I’m using up my stockpiles…part 2.

Part 1 is here. I’ll tell you why it is, for me, and for friends and acquaintances I’ve observed.  Once you have a stockpile, the mindset is that you need to keep it ramped up.  There’s this constant scouting and push-push-push to get more of those items every time they’re really cheap, or free (or [...]

Getting Organized | Kids’ Clothes & Shoes

New storage solutions on the cheap!

My two youngest share a bedroom.  It’s a nice-sized room with a great walk-in closet.  I’d been hanging some of their clothes in the closet, using the shelves and floor for toys and cramming undies, socks, pjs, leggings and the like into their cute, but very small dresser. When we recently purged a scary amount [...]

Why I’m using up my stockpiles these next couple months…Part 1

I’ve coupon’d (in a serious way) off and on over the last 20 years.  Before Internet match-ups, I found it all very confusing and didn’t really keep it up longer than a month or two at a time.  It just took way too much time.  Once I discovered match-ups and places to buy coupons I [...]

Weight Reduction + Wardrobe Reduction = Less Laundry?

My clothes are a little tricky as a no-spend item, because I’ve recently lost 40+ pounds and hope to continue to lose through 2012.  I DO NEED CLOTHES right now however.  My pants finally are to the point where I can’t keep them up without constantly hitching them (which looks so attractive, I’m sure) so [...]

Sell, Sell, Sell!

A popular tip to help pay down debt and/or ramp up savings is to find things you’re not using and sell them.  It’s easy to fall into the “I don’t really have anything worth enough to justify the effort” mindset.  That’s what I often do.  I’ve held a few all-day garage sales that have yielded [...]

Challenge Update

While I have not sewn anything for the little kids yet in 2012, I’ve refrained from buying much.  I got out their summer clothes from last year and most still fit!  Dakota had outgrown his shirts in length, so I splurged and bought him eight t-shirts (most Angry Birds and Nintendo) at Wal-Mart.  $6 each [...]

Minimalism – First Steps and a Plan

In light of starting paleo/primal, it seemed natural to start in the pantry, with food, so my good friend helped me tackle that first.  We had so much to get rid of–rice, pastas, baking mixes, canned and bottled items that aren’t paleo-friendly, etc.   My friend’s family isn’t paleo (yet!! LOL) so she was kind enough to take it [...]

Spring Cleaning – Part 1 – The Plan

springcleaning2011

Since we just moved in November, it really seems like there shouldn’t be tooooo much to do for spring cleaning, but no, that’s a faulty assumption. We moved a couple days before Thanksgiving and before I knew it, Chanukah was upon us. And then Christmas. And then hubby’s week off from work. And then New [...]

Cutting back without much ouch!

I talked a bit about this here but I’m checking in to update the progress I’ve actually made. 1)  Efax and Stamps.com — I totally blanked on canceling them but it’s on my to-do list for today.  I e-mailed Efax’s customer support several times about the double-billing, even sending them statement copies, and they no [...]
